Weird and Wonderful
What is weird and wonderful?
Weird and wonderful is centered on surrealism, the art movement. Surrealism started to catch people’s attention when it was paint and a brush, we take example of this from Salvador Dali, just as art started to change it also became a photography trait. It was originally made to combine the dreams and reality to a person.
'Hector'I have found these 2 images of an artist named 'hector' as I can’t find who this person is I can only assume he is not a professional, he just does it as a hobby or in spare time. The reason I like these images is because he’s made cartoon like things become alive. For example image one looks like a scene in a Simpsons movie where Homer gets shot with a bow n arrow or even a cupid type of theme (however shot in another place). Image 2 is shown to have steam coming out his ears. This is used in cartoons to show how a character is angry or frustrated and I really like the way he’s used light photography to infiltrate this in his photographs.I also admire the use of the warm and dark styled background left (warm) right (cold). He also used a medium depth of files so the person is the main focus of the image. They both use compositional rules and the light photography is done along the first horizontal line. He takes the image at a mid-shot angle.

The reason I like these images is due to the humour given off. They look like they could be cartoons and I like the way he has combined real world, cartoons and lights to create a light photography piece. using a slow shutter speed uses a good level of skill and many takes to create the cartoon logos. I also like the use of warm and cold filters in his photographs.
ERIK JOHANSSON

Erik Johansson was born in April 1985 in the wilderness of Sweden, now grown up he has become a naturally gifted surreal photographer. He captures ideas by combining images in new ways to create what looks like a real photograph, yet with logical inconsistencies to impart an effect of surrealism. Johansson spends dozens of hours using image manipulation software such as adobe Photoshop to alter the image digitally to make them the way he imagined it. He seems to use large open places and the top horizontal line in the rule of thirds to add the effect of depth in the image. He also has an extremely fast shutter speed more than likely 1/4000 to make the image look crisp to the eye, this shows he doesn't want to show movement. He uses his website, http://www.erikjohanssonphoto.com/ to help promote and sell his pieces with prices ranging from £53.99+ for smaller images to £2688.82+ for his bigger images.

Taylor Marie McCormic
Taylor Marie is a 19 year old surreal photographer who with her dream-like style, tells a story with a single frame. She study’s at Savannah College of art and design & I think her images reflect on her interests and passions. The images below show me she has the passion for planes or heights, or this could be more of like a thing she has seen and wants to replicate. I like the way she creates depth using her background or by making her focus point smaller A good example of this is when she made the plane smaller to make the depth appear larger. She also has a slight under exposure to the images purely for effect (as seen in second image) She seems to use different viewpoints for example the first image is a mid-shot, the second took in birds eye view.

Shoot 1:
Crying blood shoot:
For my shoot I plan to:
Take a photograph of a models face close up
Take a picture of some fake blood or paint dripping on paper
Use Photoshop editing software to put the dripping blood onto the same layer trying to portray the image of a model crying blood. I will further more turn the image black and white to add some sadistic effect to the image.

Close Up Of Face
I have taken a series of images to make sure I can use the best image I possibly could. I took a close up, keeping the eyes up on the top horizontal rule of thirds, also my exposure was set at 0 therefore I would not have an over exposed or underexposed image. At the top of my selection of images it seems to be over exposed however this was actually because I was facing the sun, therefore I turned the opposite way which also gave my model a slight glow to the face. I also took the photograph as a close up so I could emphasize emotion.

Blood Images:
I have photographed fake blood dripping down paper so I could photo manipulate it into a fake blood tear drop.
Using the Perspective tool I changed the perspective so the tear drop looked more realistic on my model. This was because I couldn’t get the drip to look realistic on my model.
After I had finished editing the tear droplet I stepped back and looked at it, I noticed that there was something missing. I looked back at my research and I understood that many of Taylor Marie’s images had some sort of filter over them therefore I have decided to change my photograph to black and white.
|
I used the free transform tool to shape the droplet around the predominant facial features of my model instead of it just being a straight line.
These are the black and white sliders I change to create the dynamic black and white effect.
|
From my research I made a plan to take inspiration however I changed it from a dreamlike to the opposite, I decided however to still use the black and white filter as I still wanted to work in a similar style to Marie's.
shoot 2:
3D runner shoot:
For my shoot I plan-
Take a photograph of a model sprinting (starting phase)
Take a picture of a mobile phone from same angle I will shoot runner
Use Photoshop editing software to over lay runner over phone
Using the perspective tool and eraser delete parts of background and make the runner pop out

shoot 3:
Bird Flock Shoot
- I found the image I wanted to manipulate my manipulated birds over
- Screenshot 2 shows i used the 'magic wand' tool to delete the background
- I positioned my flock into a deserted position
- I was about to stop however I decided to change the perspective to try add a more realistic effect
- I was manipulating different part to the flock in size to add more depth to my image
- I warped my image then to help add the effect of yet more depth
Further editing.
The point in my next section of editing is to try recreate a more artistic like scenery but using what I already have and editing software, this will make it match with the image I researched from Taylor Marie McCormic.
By making these subtle changed I have created a more artistic effect that clearly shows inspiration from Taylor Marie McCormics images if I were to re do this editing I would have first changed the colour of the birds to a purple colour and I would of also tried to change my background image to something where I could change the colours into those which are complementary colours
From my research with Taylor Marie I found that she likes using animals in her shoot so I decided instead of using humans to use birds coming out of the water, I chose to do this as this is the complete opposite to the ‘normal' scenarios in day to day life. I also used a filter to add an artistic effect to my image.
